2. Lifeguards demand fair pay and Queensland beaches face disruption
What’s Happening?
Queensland’s professional lifeguards are preparing for industrial action after rejecting Surf Lifesaving Queensland’s (SLSQ) latest pay offer for the second time in two months.
Why It Matters
Represented by the Australian Workers Union (AWU), lifeguards are campaigning for fair wages and better conditions amidst rising cost-of-living pressures.
Lifeguards are essential to public safety on Queensland’s beaches, especially during the busy summer season.
The AWU warns that inadequate pay could drive experienced lifeguards away, risking beach safety.
Local Impact
Starting pay disparity: SLSQ lifeguards earn $34.28/hour compared to $42.90/hour for Council lifeguards.
Over 500 community members have signed a petition supporting fair wages.
Coastal communities are rallying behind lifeguards, recognising their vital role.
