1. One Big Thing: Pike pushes for better mobile coverage
What’s happening? MP Henry Pike is rallying Redlands locals to report mobile outages after Cyclone Alfred to push for critical network upgrades.
Why it matters? The cyclone exposed major gaps in disaster communication, leaving residents unable to access emergency services or check on loved ones.
Local Impact: Many residents lost reception when they needed help most. Some areas still have weaker mobile coverage than before the storm.
By the numbers:
41 local mobile upgrades in recent years, but gaps remain.
Poor reception has been a top issue since 2022.
Cyclone Alfred crippled emergency communications, exposing life-threatening risks.
Zoom Out: Mobile coverage issues in the Redlands have persisted for years. Pike is pushing for federal and telco support to strengthen infrastructure.
What To Look For Next? Pike’s office is collecting community reports to push for upgrades. Share your experience at henrypike.com.au/mobile_resilience.
2. Redland City’s rapid recovery plan
Redland City Council has rolled out a comprehensive recovery plan following the impacts of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, focusing on waste management and community support.
Kerbside green waste collection began last 17 March 2025, helping residents clear fallen branches and storm debris. Recycling and Waste Centres have extended hours to accommodate the increased waste demand, while Community Recovery Hubs offer grants and emotional support to those in need.
Residents struggling with storm clean-up, particularly those with mobility or health challenges, can register for green waste removal support through the Council. The initiative prioritises disaster-related waste while ensuring public safety and efficiency in disposal. Additionally, the Council has provided guidelines for sandbag disposal, reminding residents to avoid placing contaminated sandbags in kerbside bins.
As recovery efforts continue, the Council urges residents to stay updated via their official website and social media. With a strong community response and organised support services, Redlands Coast is on the path to a swift recovery.
