Today’s newsletter is 1,207 words: a 5.5-minute read.
Welcome back to Thursday, the first week of spring and September 5.
🥇 Fun Paralympics Fact: The first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960, but the event has its roots in a small sports competition held in 1948 for British World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries.
Organised by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England, this event is considered the birthplace of the Paralympic movement.
📣 Let’s give a big shout-out to local Paralympian Jake Michel for scoring a silver medal in his specialty event, the men’s 100m breaststroke at the Paris 2024 Games.

Why It Matters
The event at Redlands Showground bursts with colour, music, and local talent over two jam-packed days.
Expect a line-up of musicians, dancers, poets, and artists, all performing across the venue.
The festival features an unbeatable ticket price, a dedicated kids’ area, a sideshow alley, and spectacular fireworks.

2. New knife sale ban for minors sees Jack’s Law getting tougher
By Marianne Zander.
What's Happening
Starting September 1, new laws make it illegal for retailers to sell knives to minors.
Retailers must now display age restriction signs and securely store specific controlled items like machetes and axes.
These changes are part of the expansion of Jack’s Law, which also extends metal detection operations to more public areas, including shopping centres and entertainment venues.
Why it Matters
Jack’s Law, inspired by the tragic death of Jack Beasley, aims to reduce knife crime and protect the community.
By preventing minors from accessing knives and increasing wanding operations, these laws enhance public safety.
By the Numbers
Since Jack’s Law passed:
over 72,000: people who have been scanned
689: weapons seized
more than 7,000: operations across Queensland
$67,746: fines faced by retailers violating the new knife sale laws
