1. One Big Thing: Local Addison’s bone marrow search update and Redlands help needed to meet hospital blood demand
What’s Happening
After the National Blood Week event at Capalaba Bunnings last weekend, where Addison’s mum, Bianca, donated blood, great news emerged: Little Addison has found a bone marrow match from the UK.
Why It Matters
However, Addison Kemp, a five-year-old with Aplastic Anaemia, along with many other Aussies, still urgently needs blood donations.
Her disorder causes insufficient blood cell production, making her prone to infections and uncontrolled bleeding.
Addison and others like her will need ongoing blood products post-transplant., which is where you can help.
Even though National Blood Week is over, donations are crucial year-round.
By the Numbers
Nearly 9 million Australians will need blood in their lifetime.
Only 500,000 blood donors help across Australia; more are needed.
Addison requires multiple weekly blood transfusions.
Blood is needed every 18 seconds in Australia.
Local Impact
“Thousands of Queenslanders are needed every week to roll up their sleeves and give blood and plasma,” says Wes Thomas from The Red Cross
Bianca said, “34% of the blood that is donated goes to oncology patients and with children in particular like Addison, they can sometimes need up to three times more for the required treatment.”
What To Look For Next
Victoria Point Mobile Donor Centre is coming in two weeks so roll up your sleeves if you can:
Monday 1 July – 44 appointments available.
Tuesday 2 July – 47 appointments available.
