3. Meningococcal Disease to peak in spring
What’s Happening
Meningococcal Disease cases are expected to peak during winter and into September, leading experts and prominent Australians to urge parents to stay vigilant.
Why It Matters
Though rare, meningococcal disease, can escalate quickly and mimic flu-like symptoms, leading to delayed treatment.
This puts children and adolescents, especially during peak season, at higher risk.
By the Numbers
36% of parents correctly identified meningococcal symptoms
81% were unaware of multiple meningococcal strains
3 strains (B, W, and Y) are most common in Australia
Local Impact
Peak season increases the risk for children under two and adolescents. Educating parents about symptoms and prevention is crucial for early detection and treatment, potentially saving lives.
