1. One Big Thing: Redland Hospital research wins international award
By Marianne Zander
What’s Happening: A research project developed at Redland Hospital has earned global recognition, taking out the 2025 Sir John Brotherston Prize from the UK’s Faculty of Public Health.
Why It Matters: Led by Dr Akshay Pabary in collaboration with Dr Rachel Brimelow, the study explored cultural capability among overseas-trained doctors after completing an interactive e-learning module.
The study was inspired by Dr Pabary’s own experience delivering care to First Nations patients and highlights the need to strengthen cultural understanding among international medical professionals.
Zoom In: Dr Pabary, who completed the research while working at Redland Hospital, has since returned to the UK to begin an academic public health training program in Newcastle.
He credits the project—and the support of supervisors Dr Kirsten Strudwick and Dr Brimelow—for helping him secure a competitive spot.
Local Impact: Metro South Health’s Assoc Prof Salih Salih said the project reflects Bayside Health Service’s commitment to embedding research into clinical practice to improve care for all.
What to Look For Next?
Dr Pabary will receive his award in June at the Faculty’s annual ceremony in the UK.

2. Funding now open for local Seniors’ Month events
By Marianne Zander
What’s Happening: Redlands Coast community groups can now apply for funding to run free events and activities during Queensland Seniors Month this October.
Why It Matters: Helping to support activities that keep seniors engaged, active, and socially connected, Redland City Council is offering up to $2,000 per organisation to support programs that promote connection, wellbeing, and positive ageing.
Local Impact: Last year’s events included health workshops, arts and crafts, pickleball, and even chair games, demonstrating there’s something for everyone, whether you’re lively and limber or just looking for gentle social fun.
Zoom In: The grants are part of Council’s Redlands Coast Age-friendly Action Plan 2021–2026, which aims to create an inclusive, age-friendly city where seniors thrive.
What to Look For Next: Applications close 5 pm Sunday, 22 June 2025. To apply or learn more, visit redland.qld.gov.au/seniors or email 3829 8999.

3. 5,300 reasons to celebrate for Rapid Relief Team
This National Volunteer Week, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) is honouring 5,300 volunteers, including many from Redlands, for their work supporting communities through storms, emergencies, and charitable events.
In 2025 alone, the team served 27,842 meals and contributed 4,414 hours across 203 events.
Redlands locals have seen RRT in action during storm recovery and through hospital appreciation lunches for International Nurses Day.
Director Mick Dunn said, “We aren’t even halfway through 2025, but it has already been a huge year for RRT.”
Founded in 2013, RRT now has over 16,000 volunteers globally, with many active in Southeast Queensland.
More events are planned this May as RRT prepares for the winter season.

Community Contributor - Thought for the week
You're arguing, so whose right, whose wrong??
We know there are two sides to every story, but did you know there are always three? Yours, the other, and the truth.
One or the other, mostly neither, is anywhere near a valid reality! Truth deals with 4+ dimensions, our argument deals with 1, mostly ‘effects’.
So, pause momentarily, use this interlude to ‘turn in’ and listen silently. Emotions rage and distort, breathe them away. Then ask yourself, what’s back of this? What else are you observing? One day, you’ll see more than appearances, and thus, the journey of true relations begins.
