Volume 45: RedFest 2025 Cancelled | AI cracks down on teen Insta accounts | Tesla protests go global | Native Title Respondent funding and heaps more
Today's newsletter is 1,134 words, a 6-minute read.
Before the sun rises over Moreton Bay tomorrow, the people of Redlands will gather in quiet reverence.
From the cenotaphs of Cleveland and Redland Bay to the dawn vigils on the islands and the tribute at Karragarra, thousands will stand shoulder to shoulder in silence—perhaps even in the rain—honouring the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who gave everything for the country we call home.
For me, it’s an extra special day as it also marks my girls’ birthdays.
A day for remembrance, reflection, appreciation, and celebration.
Long live the memory of our Anzacs and the sacrifices they made to help make this place one of the best in the world.
We will remember them.

1. One Big Thing: RedFest 2025 Cancelled
What’s Happening: RedFest, the Redlands Coast’s longest-running community festival, has been cancelled for 2025 after organisers failed to secure suitable September dates from Redland City Council.
By the Numbers:
🎉 15,000+ people attended RedFest in 2024, making it Redlands' biggest annual event.
📆 8 date alternatives were offered by the Council, none aligning with the strawberry season.
⏳ 3 years of negotiations failed to produce a viable solution for 2025.
Strawberries, Stalls… and Stalemates: Organisers say booking inconsistencies and Council delays made planning impossible.
What The People Say: 🗣 “This should’ve been an incredible Strawberry Festival celebration… It’s clear the support just isn’t there.” — Robyn Keenan, organiser

2. $8.3M for Native Title Respondent funding in Redlands
Federal Member for Bowman, Henry Pike MP, has announced that a Dutton LNP Government will reinstate the Native Title Respondent and Officer Scheme, committing $8.3 million over four years.
The funding will assist councils like Redland City Council in managing the high legal costs associated with native title claims.
Mr Pike has advocated for the scheme’s return since 2022, following a major native title claim affecting around 3,500 council-managed properties across the Redlands. He criticised the Labor Government’s decision to abolish the scheme, leaving local communities to shoulder the financial burden alone.
“This is an incredibly expensive and lengthy process that will potentially cost ratepayers millions,” Mr Pike said. He added that Redlands residents deserve a “fair go” and should not be punished by what he called “Labor’s poor policies.”
The LNP pledge aims to restore fairness to native title proceedings, ensuring both claimants and respondents receive appropriate legal support. If elected, the Coalition plans to prioritise Redlands and other high-impact regions in the scheme’s rollout.
3. New Cricket Program unites diverse youth
What’s Happening: On 22 April 2025, SSI and the Usman Khawaja Foundation launched a cricket program at Woodridge North State School to support multicultural youth.
Why It Matters: This sport-driven partnership helps migrant and refugee children build confidence, community connection, and wellbeing.
By the Numbers
20% + of QLD youth are from migrant or refugee backgrounds
Cricket is the top 3 organised sports in Australia
SSI’s Logan program has engaged thousands in inclusive sport
Breaking Boundaries, Not Bails: The partnership will grow to include Multicultural Cups, mentoring, and a youth-designed innovation hub.
What the People Say: “Cricket is a bridge to new beginnings,” added Usman Khawaja.
What to Look For Next: Watch for new clinics, community events, and co-designed youth initiatives in more regions.
